Nestled along the banks of Crabtree Creek, Laurel Hills was first developed in the 1950s by J.Y. Phelps Sr.

He built two ponds in the area for family recreation, both of which remain cherished landmarks.

Phelps was inspired by the native plants and unusual microclimate to give streets names like Galax Drive, Arbutus Drive and Laurel Ridge Road.
