What Is Knightdale, NC Actually Like to Live In?

Knightdale is an eastern Wake County suburb with one of the shortest drives to downtown Raleigh of any town around it, a median of 15 minutes off-peak in our routing. It has grown quickly, from 11,401 people in 2010 to 19,435 in 2020, and much of the housing is suburban. You get closeness to Raleigh and good highway access, but less small-town history than some of its neighbors.

Is Knightdale a good place to live? Yes, if you work in Raleigh or eastern Wake County and want a short drive and a strong central park. It gets harder if you commute to Durham or Chapel Hill. For homes and neighborhoods, see our Knightdale real estate and community guide.

Where Is Knightdale, and How Long Are the Commutes?

Knightdale sits just east of Raleigh in Wake County. I-540 passes directly through town, and I-87/US 64 forms a freeway bypass along its south side, with Knightdale Boulevard as the main local road.

These are off-peak drive times we routed from 23 Knightdale communities. Rush hour runs longer, so test your real commute at the hour you would drive it.

Destination Median off-peak drive Range by neighborhood
Downtown Raleigh 15 min 10-18 min
WakeMed Raleigh 15 min 10-20 min
Duke Raleigh Hospital 17 min 12-20 min
WakeMed North 21 min 16-25 min
UNC Health Rex 25 min 20-28 min
WakeMed Cary 31 min 26-38 min

See how each community compares on the Knightdale neighborhoods page.

What Are Property Taxes in Knightdale, NC?

For the current fiscal year, a home inside town limits pays 53.71 cents per $100 to Wake County and 44 cents per $100 to the town, for a combined $0.9771 per $100 of assessed value. That works out to about $4,886 a year on a home assessed at $500,000.

Assessed value Annual county and town tax
$500,000 About $4,886
$750,000 About $7,328
$1,000,000 $9,771

Two things could change that. Knightdale had a 2026 bond referendum for parks and a community center that could raise property taxes, and Wake County has a 2027 revaluation underway. Confirm the exact address and current rates before you budget.
