Book My Relocation Strategy CallWhat Is Wendell, NC Actually Like to Live In?
Wendell is an eastern Wake County town where a 1903 railroad-era downtown sits next to one of the county’s biggest master-planned communities, and downtown Raleigh is a 22-minute median drive from our tracked neighborhoods. You get newer homes, more space for the money, and quick I-87 access into the city. You give up a short drive to RTP and the west side of the Triangle.
Wendell was incorporated on March 6, 1903 and counted 9,793 people in the 2020 census. The town is growing fast: its taxable property base grew from $3.40 billion to $3.90 billion in a single year, and most of that growth is new houses.
Is Wendell a good place to live? Yes, if you work in Raleigh, at WakeMed’s main campus, or from home, and you want a newer house without paying western-Wake prices. It is a weaker fit if you commute to RTP, Cary, or Durham. For homes and neighborhoods, see our Wendell real estate and community guide.
Where Is Wendell, and How Long Are the Commutes?
Wendell sits in eastern Wake County between Knightdale and Zebulon. I-87 runs along the town’s west side with three exits, carrying US 64 and US 264 toward Raleigh, and Wendell Boulevard is the main road through town.
These are off-peak drive times we routed from 20 Wendell communities. Rush hour runs longer, so test your real commute at the hour you would drive it.
| Destination | Median off-peak drive | Range by neighborhood |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Raleigh | 22 min | 17-27 min |
| WakeMed Raleigh | 23 min | 17-28 min |
| Duke Raleigh Hospital | 25 min | 19-30 min |
| WakeMed North | 29 min | 19-34 min |
| UNC Health Rex | 32 min | 27-37 min |
| WakeMed Cary | 39 min | 33-44 min |
| Research Triangle Park | 45 min | — |
The direction is the whole story. Wendell is close to Raleigh and far from RTP, so it works for a downtown or east Raleigh job and costs you on a west-side one. Compare each community on the Wendell neighborhoods page.
What Are Property Taxes in Wendell, NC?
For the 2026 tax year, a home inside Wendell town limits pays Wake County’s rate of 53.71 cents per $100 plus the town’s rate of 42 cents per $100, unchanged in the FY 2027 budget. Combined, that is $0.9571 per $100 of assessed value.
| Assessed value | Annual county and town tax |
|---|---|
| $500,000 | $4,786 |
| $750,000 | $7,178 |
| $1,000,000 | $9,571 |
The town also bills a solid waste fee and a stormwater fee on top of property tax, so ask for the full bill on any address. Homes outside town limits pay the county rate plus a fire district instead. Confirm the exact address with the Wake County tax office before you budget.

How Our Team Helps You Decide Whether Wendell Fits
Choosing Wendell comes down to where you work, whether you want Wendell Falls or an established street, and what the full tax and fee bill looks like on a specific address. Those answers change by neighborhood, so the town name alone won’t settle it.
The Tim M. Clarke Team, with The Jim Allen Group at Coldwell Banker HPW, works across Wendell and the rest of the Triangle. On a new build, we represent you, not the builder: we read the contract, the allowances, and the lot premiums before you sign. Tell us where you work and what you need from a home, and we will narrow Wendell down to the neighborhoods worth your time, or tell you if Knightdale fits you better.
