Some families love their lot, their street and their school, and have simply outgrown the house. Others want to start from bare ground. Most builders are set up for one of those buyers. Snyder-Hankins Custom Homes works with both.
The Raleigh company is family-owned and, in its words, “100% veteran-owned.” Its president, Dan Snyder, retired from the Marine Corps as a lieutenant colonel after more than 29 years, and Austin Snyder runs operations while serving as a Marine Corps Reserve captain. The company says its homes have earned multiple Parade of Homes Gold Awards, including a perfect score, and that its projects have ranged from 14,000-square-foot estates to screened porches.
Its current emphasis has shifted toward additions and luxury outdoor living, alongside custom homes. This guide covers what the record shows and what to confirm before you sign.
Who Is Snyder-Hankins Custom Homes?
Snyder-Hankins Custom Homes is a custom home builder and addition contractor with an office at 8368 Six Forks Road, Suite 202, in Raleigh. The office phone on its website is (919) 870-6339.
Snyder-Hankins Custom Homes, Inc. is listed as a builder member in the 2025 Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County directory. The company’s homepage also says it belongs to the Wake County Home Builders Association and the Triangle Builders Guild.
The documented history
The company’s own pages give two founding dates. The homepage says Snyder-Hankins has served the Triangle “since 1997,” with “over 28 years of experience.” The Our Team page says the company was “founded in 1999 by Dan Snyder and Tom Hankins.” Either way, it has been building in Raleigh for more than a quarter century. Ask which date applies to the corporation that will sign your contract.
The Our Team page says Tom Hankins has since stepped away from the business. The company continues under:
- Dan Snyder, President. More than 28 years in custom homes, and more than 29 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, retiring as a lieutenant colonel.
- Austin Snyder, Vice President of Operations. With the company since 2005. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural business management in 2018, served nearly eight years as a Marine Corps officer, and now serves in the Marine Corps Active Reserves as a captain while pursuing an MBA.
Client reviews on the homepage also mention team members named Tom, Johanna, Dan and Tim.
One naming note: the 2025 HBA directory also lists Marquis Homes and CalPack LLC at the same Six Forks Road suite and office phone, under Thomas Hankins. If you hire Snyder-Hankins, make sure the contract names Snyder-Hankins Custom Homes, Inc.
Where Does Snyder-Hankins Build?
Snyder-Hankins says it works “throughout the Triangle” from its Raleigh office. The website does not name neighborhoods or list project addresses, and its gallery page is photographs only.
Ask for the addresses of recent custom homes and additions, especially in the part of Wake County you are considering.
What Does Snyder-Hankins Build?
Snyder-Hankins builds luxury custom homes, custom home additions, and outdoor living spaces. Its FAQ says it primarily focuses on “luxury custom homes, premium custom home additions, luxury outdoor living spaces.” Its Our Team page puts the emphasis on additions and outdoor living.

Custom homes
The Custom Homes page names three styles as examples: modern farmhouse, timeless estate and luxury retreat. One client review says the company helped them develop the design with an architect and provided a design consultant for interior and exterior selections. Another reviewer says they built two completely custom homes with Snyder-Hankins.
Additions and outdoor living
The additions page lists first-floor primary suites, in-law suites, home offices, bonus and media rooms, sunrooms, garage expansions and carriage-house suites. The outdoor living page covers covered porches, outdoor kitchens, pools and pool houses, fireplaces, decks, three-season rooms, patios and landscape integration.
How Does Building With Snyder-Hankins Work?
Snyder-Hankins publishes a three-step custom home process and a detailed process page written for additions and outdoor projects.
For custom homes:
- Design and planning with you and your architect, aligned with your budget and lot.
- Build, with the company managing every phase.
- Deliver, after a detailed walkthrough before move-in.
The detailed process page adds useful specifics:
- Pre-contract. Initial ideas, an on-site consultation, an office design meeting on materials, a rough estimate, your review, then design and engineering by your architect.
- Build cost. Snyder-Hankins prices the finalized plans.
- Contract. Scope, plans and payment schedule are confirmed and signed.
- Post-contract. Permitting, material procurement, site preparation, foundation, framing, exterior, rough-ins, insulation, drywall and trim, finishes, final inspections and certificate of occupancy, a detailed walkthrough, and final payment.
Two details stand out. Architectural and engineering costs are separate and the client’s responsibility. And the FAQ says that membership in the Triangle Builders Guild lets the company lock in some material prices for a period, which improves the accuracy of the estimate. The company does not publish standard timelines; it builds a schedule during planning.
What Should You Verify Before Signing With Snyder-Hankins?
Before signing with Snyder-Hankins, verify the entity and license, the award record, the current share of new-home work, and the warranty. Our guides to finding a Triangle builder and why the builder’s agent works for the builder explain how to keep someone on your side.
Confirm the entity and license
Match Snyder-Hankins Custom Homes, Inc. and its license number to the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors. The website does not publish a license number. Ask about the founding date discrepancy while you are at it.
Ask for recent new-home references
The company’s current pages emphasize additions and outdoor living. If you are building new, ask how many complete custom homes it has delivered in the last three years and tour one.
Get the award details
Ask which homes won Parade of Homes Gold, in what years, and which one earned the perfect score.
Budget for design separately
The process page says architecture and engineering are client costs. Get those quotes early so your total budget is real.
Get the warranty in writing
The website does not describe a warranty. Ask for the written terms and compare them with our home-builder warranty guide.
How Does Snyder-Hankins Compare With Other Building Options?
Snyder-Hankins is a long-established Raleigh custom builder that also builds additions, which gives existing homeowners an alternative to moving.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snyder-Hankins custom home | A new luxury home on your lot | Your architect plus their selections help | Rough estimate, then build cost on final plans | Buyers who want an experienced, process-driven builder |
| Snyder-Hankins addition | More space without moving | Your architect | Rough estimate, then build cost | Owners who love their location |
| Production builder | A new home in a subdivision | Builder plans | Published base price | Buyers who want speed and amenities |
| Buy a larger resale | Moving up quickly | Done | List price | Buyers willing to change neighborhoods |
Who Is a Strong Fit for Snyder-Hankins Custom Homes?
Snyder-Hankins fits a buyer or owner who wants an established, family-run builder with a disciplined process, whether the project is a new house or a major addition.
The strongest candidates usually:
- own a lot or a home in Wake County;
- are working with, or ready to hire, an architect;
- want a luxury finish level and outdoor living built in;
- value a detailed, step-by-step process and clear communication;
- will verify the award record and warranty before signing.
It is a weaker fit for buyers who want a builder-provided plan, a spec home to buy now, or a published price per square foot.
Final Thoughts About Snyder-Hankins Custom Homes From Tim Clarke
Snyder-Hankins has been building in Raleigh since the late 1990s, it publishes a detailed, step-by-step process, and it is a family-owned company led by two Marine Corps officers. Those are good signs.
Ask the specific questions: which date the company was founded, which homes won Gold, how much new-home work it is doing today, and what the warranty covers.
I have spent 17+ years in Triangle real estate. Our team builds as well as sells, so we can help you decide whether to add on or move, and we know how to read an addition contract as closely as a new-home contract.
