BUILDER PROFILE

Thayer Homes

Thayer Homes is a custom builder in the Raleigh-Durham Triangle, working in Durham, Raleigh and Wake Forest. It is listed in our custom and semi-custom builder directory rather than the production data set, so it holds no standing community inventory here and each build is priced from its own plan, lot and specification. The builder writes and presents that contract through its own representative; we represent the buyer instead.

Triangle towns Thayer Homes serves

Thayer Homes's onsite agents represent Thayer Homes.

Every sales consultant in a Thayer Homes model home works for Thayer Homes: the builder's contract, the builder's lender, the builder's incentives. Tim M. Clarke represents the buyer on the other side of that table. He compares Thayer Homes communities, reads the contract and warranty before you sign, and attends the walkthroughs. Register with him on your first visit.

Thayer Homes is selling two very different houses at once.

One is a 4,549-square-foot home on Rosslare Mews Lane with 5.5 baths, listed at $1,525,000. The other is a 2,257-square-foot home on Conover Road listed at $439,000. Behind both is a husband-and-wife team, Terry and Kristi Thayer, with more than a dozen pre-sale lots coming in three neighborhoods.

That range is useful. A first move-up buyer and a buyer shopping above $1 million can both find something here. This guide covers what the public record shows, where the listings disagree with each other, and what to confirm before you sign.

Who Is Thayer Homes?

Thayer Homes is owned by Terry and Kristi Thayer. Their website says they met in 2005 and began working together in 2006 on residential remodels, then grew into building new homes over the following decade. The site’s search description cites “over 30 years of experience,” but the site does not give a founding year for the company.

The owners the company names

  • Terry Thayer, co-owner, started as a carpenter and became a licensed general contractor. The site says he has designed and built homes for more than two decades.
  • Kristi Thayer, co-owner, is a Triangle native and a real estate agent with more than 15 years of real estate experience, per her bio. She calls the company an “award winning team,” though the site does not name the awards.

Thayer Homes is listed as a builder member in the 2025 Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County directory. The directory lists (919) 514-1000. The website shows no main phone line, only a text-message help number, (919) 514-1002, and an inquiry form.

What buyers say

One published review describes crown molding, a tray ceiling in the primary bedroom, upgraded door casings, painted doors, and “the best shower I’ve ever used,” and praises a warranty manager who answered emails “day and night.” Another reviewer says he has sold Thayer more than a dozen properties over the years.

Where Does Thayer Homes Build?

The site lists raleigh, durham, and wake-forest as its areas. Its current and coming homes sit in four places:

  • Rosslare, described on the listing pages as Wake Forest: 2417 Rosslare Mews Lane and lots 9 and 24.
  • Serenity Reserve, a new neighborhood off Halifax Road in Youngsville, in Franklin County: lots 9, 11, and 19.
  • Greenbrook: lots 11, 32, 39, 65, and 68. The site does not say where Greenbrook is.
  • Conover Road: 637B and 639B, part of a run of Conover Road homes Thayer has built and sold.

The sold list adds about twenty more addresses, including Rosslare Pond Trail, Hopkins Street, North Elizabeth, Dixon Road, Woodsborough, and three homes on Dover Hills.

What Does Thayer Homes Build?

How Does Buying From Thayer Homes Work?

Thayer does not publish a step-by-step process. The site offers two paths:

  1. Buy a move-in-ready home from the current list.
  2. Buy a coming-soon or pre-sale home, often with a virtual walkthrough and floor plan available before completion.

A “Looking to build with Thayer Homes?” form suggests the company will also discuss custom work. Ask how much you can change on a pre-sale home, and when selections lock.

What Should You Verify Before Signing With Thayer Homes?

Thayer’s listings are detailed. Some of the details disagree. Our guides to finding a Triangle builder and why the builder’s agent works for the builder explain how to protect yourself.

Know who represents whom

Kristi Thayer is a co-owner and a real estate agent. On a Thayer home, the builder’s side represents the builder. We represent you.

Reconcile the listing details

The site gives different numbers for the same homes. The 2417 Rosslare Mews Lane detail page says 5 bedrooms and gives a Wendell, NC 27591 address, while the list page says 4 bedrooms and the same page describes the location as Wake Forest. Serenity lot 11 shows 5 bedrooms on one page and 4 on another. The Conover Road page references both Durham and Raleigh landmarks. Get the plat, the tax address, the jurisdiction, and the final plan attached to your contract.

Confirm the license and the entity

Match the contracting entity (the HBA directory lists Thayer Homes Inc.) and Terry Thayer’s license number to the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors.

Get the warranty in writing

A client credits Thayer’s warranty manager, but the terms are not published. Ask for them before you sign and compare with our home-builder warranty guide.

Who Is a Strong Fit for Thayer Homes?

Thayer fits a buyer who wants a new home from a small, owner-run builder and wants to deal with the owners directly.

The strongest candidates usually:

  • want new construction in Wake Forest, Youngsville, or close-in Durham and Raleigh;
  • are ready to buy a finished or nearly finished home;
  • will compare the listing details with the plat and county records;
  • will read the warranty before signing.

It is a weaker fit for buyers who need a fully custom design or published pre-sale pricing.

Final Thoughts About Thayer Homes From Tim Clarke

Terry and Kristi Thayer have built and sold a long list of homes, from Conover Road to Rosslare, and their buyers mention details like painted doors and tray ceilings that you usually pay extra for. A warranty manager who answers email at night is worth something too.

The listings need a careful read. Bedroom counts and addresses change from page to page, so pin down exactly what you are buying before you sign.
